Ctrl+Win+S freezes the monitor under the cursor and opens a region selector. Two ways out of it:

• Quick grab — drag a region and it saves itself to %USERPROFILE%\.deixis\screenshots\, no editor.
• Annotate — the full editor: arrow, rectangle, ellipse, pen, highlighter, text, pixelate (redact) and auto-numbered step badges. Copy puts a real image on the clipboard; Save writes the PNG.

Every save also writes a .json sidecar beside the PNG holding the clean image and the annotation list, so a grab stays re-editable rather than flattened forever. (The app reopens it via the capture_reopen command; the Library's Re-edit button on a saved grab is what calls it.)

While a free-mode session is recording, tap the chord for the toolbar — a fan of actions at the cursor: T text selection, S quick grab, A annotate, E element pick, plus Finish. PrintScreen grabs at any time during a session.

Screen recording

While it records, a small recording bar sits on the screen being recorded — a red dot, the elapsed time, Pause and Stop — placed beside the recorded area where there is room and tucked into a corner where there is not. Drag it by its body if it is over something you need; it starts the next recording where you left it. The tray icon carries a red badge too and its menu counts the elapsed time — Stop recording (3:07), which also stops it, with Pause beside it. The dictation HUD only appears while the microphone is open, so it cannot answer whether a recording is rolling; the bar and the tray can.

Pause and carry on. Press Pause on the bar, or the tray's Pause recording, and the recording waits: the dot stops pulsing, the word becomes Paused, and the clock holds still — paused time is not in the finished file and is not in the elapsed count. Resume picks up where you left off, and Stop saves one file with the pause simply not in it. The chord always means stop, paused or not. When the bar is tucked into a corner of a full-screen recording it drops to Stop alone, so that it stays out of your way; the tray is how you pause that one.

A finished recording appears in the Library with Play, Show in folder and Share a link, which uploads it and hands you a link anyone can watch without an account. Sharing needs a Deixis account; the link expires on its own, and you can revoke it from the Library's Shared filter at any time — which lists every link you have made, how much room it is using and when it dies.

If a microphone was recorded, the recording writes itself up. What you said is transcribed on this machine, split into chapters, and turned into a title and a short summary — so the row reads as "Deploying the worker" and a sentence about it rather than as a timestamp. Transcript opens the whole thing as Markdown beside the video, and Rename gives it a name of your own. The row says plainly which state it is in: no microphone means no transcript, ever; a recording waiting to be transcribed offers Transcribe; one being worked on says how far it has got; and one with no summary says why and offers Summarise. The transcript is always local. The title and summary come from a model on your own machine if you have one set up, and from Deixis's endpoint otherwise — with nothing configured you still get the transcript and the chapters, and the row says so.

Screen recording ships with FFmpeg inside the installer, so there is nothing to install; a development checkout falls back to an ffmpeg on your PATH (or at DEIXIS_FFMPEG). Press the chord and the screen freezes so you can aim — drag a region, click a window, Enter for the whole screen, Esc to cancel. A recording is silent unless a microphone is chosen, and there is no picker yet: the device is named by DEIXIS_RECORD_MIC, and without one there is nothing to transcribe.
