Installing and uninstalling
Deixis installs for your account alone, from a signed installer that Windows shows as published by Dappit, with nothing bundled alongside it. This page says what it puts on the machine, how it starts with Windows and how to stop that, where it lives in the notification area, and how to uninstall it, including the folders the uninstaller leaves for you and how to remove those too.
Installing and uninstalling
For normal use, install rather than build: run the signed Deixis_<version>_x64-setup.exe (per-user,
no admin prompt, about 51 MB since FFmpeg ships inside it for screen recording — the 141 MB of speech weights download on first run). It is
code-signed with an EV certificate, so Windows names Dappit as the publisher rather than warning
you about an unknown one. Nothing else is bundled with it. The one other thing it may install is
Microsoft's WebView2 runtime, which Deixis draws its windows with: Windows 11 already has it, and on
a PC without it the installer downloads Microsoft's own installer from Microsoft and runs it.
Updates are checked in-app: Settings → Updates.
On a Mac it is the notarized Deixis_<version>_aarch64.dmg: open it and drag Deixis to Applications.
The same Settings → Updates check applies, against a release feed of its own, so the two
platforms ship on their own schedules. macOS will ask for Accessibility and microphone permission
the first time you dictate; grant both in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
The app lives in the notification area, not the taskbar. Windows hides new tray icons by default,
so the first thing worth doing is dragging Deixis out of the overflow (^) onto the tray proper —
otherwise the only visible sign of it is the HUD while you dictate. Closing the settings window hides
it; Quit Deixis in the tray menu is what actually exits.
Deixis starts with Windows by default. Its first run registers a per-user run entry, once: switch it off in Settings → Startup (or Task Manager → Startup apps) and it stays off, because the default is never applied again, not even by an upgrade. If Windows has previously vetoed a startup entry for Deixis (Task Manager → Startup apps), the toggle clears that veto too.
Uninstalling
Settings → Apps → Installed apps, the … beside Deixis, then Uninstall (or Control Panel →
Programs and Features). It was installed for your account alone, so there is no administrator
prompt. The uninstaller removes the program, its shortcuts and its startup entry, and offers a box
that also deletes the data its windows keep.
It leaves your own files, so that a reinstall carries on where you left off: the .deixis folder in
your user profile (settings, dictionary, notes, grabs, recordings, meetings and history — every path
is under Where things land) and the speech models in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Deixis. To remove every
trace, delete %USERPROFILE%\.deixis and %LOCALAPPDATA%\Deixis after uninstalling.
On a Mac, quit Deixis and drag it from Applications to the Bin.
