The Deixis licence
These are the terms the Deixis installer shows before it installs anything, word for word. What leaves your machine, and when, is in the privacy policy, which the licence makes part of them. A question about either? support@deixis-voice.com.
The Deixis licence
Copyright (c) 2026 Dappit (Pty) Ltd. All rights reserved.
These terms govern your use of Deixis. Installing or using the software means you accept them.
Licence grant
Deixis is licensed to you, not sold.
Subject to these terms, Dappit (Pty) Ltd grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Deixis. A licence is granted to one named individual, who may install Deixis on as many machines as that individual personally uses. It may not be shared between people.
Two parts of Deixis are licensed differently, and the difference is the point:
On-device features — dictation, screen capture, screen recording, meeting recording and transcription, and everything else that runs on your own machine — are yours to keep using, and continue to receive updates, whether or not you hold a paid subscription.
Managed cloud features — text cleanup, translation and meeting notes served by Dappit's endpoint — require a current paid subscription, or the free trial described below.
If a subscription lapses, Deixis keeps working and keeps updating; only the managed cloud features stop. Deixis needs no account and no network connection to dictate, and nothing in these terms is intended to change that.
Restrictions
You may not copy, distribute, sublicense, sell, rent or lend Deixis, nor modify it or create derivative works of it, nor reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, except:
(a) to the extent that any of these restrictions is prohibited by law that applies to you and cannot be waived by agreement; and
(b) as expressly permitted by the licence of a third-party component distributed with Deixis — see "Third-party components" below.
You may not remove or obscure any copyright, licence or attribution notice.
Fees, renewal and cancellation
Paid subscriptions renew automatically for successive terms unless cancelled. Dappit will give you notice by email before each renewal charge.
You may cancel at any time. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current term, and Deixis continues to work as described under "Licence grant".
If you are unhappy with a charge, tell us within 14 days of it and we will refund it in full.
A subscription may begin with a free trial of the managed cloud features, which runs for seven days and needs no card. It does not renew and it does not become a paid subscription unless you choose one.
These terms do not limit any rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 or other consumer protection law that applies to you. Where such law gives you a right that these terms would restrict, that law prevails.
Your content and your privacy
Everything you dictate, record, capture or transcribe with Deixis is yours. Dappit claims no ownership of it and no licence to use it.
Speech recognition runs on your own machine. Your audio, your screen recordings and your screen captures are never uploaded by Deixis.
What does leave your machine, and when, is set out in the published Deixis privacy statement, which governs and forms part of these terms. Dappit will not weaken it without notice to you.
Termination
This licence terminates automatically if you materially breach it and do not remedy the breach within a reasonable time after being asked to.
Dappit may terminate this licence on reasonable notice. If Dappit terminates it for any reason other than your breach, Dappit will refund the unused portion of any subscription you have paid for.
On termination you must stop using Deixis and remove it from your machines.
No warranty, and limits on liability
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.
Nothing in this section excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, and the courts of South Africa have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer elsewhere, the mandatory protections of your own country's law still apply to you.
Third-party components
Third-party components remain under their own licences; see the dependency manifests in core/Cargo.toml, ui/src-tauri/Cargo.toml, and ui/package.json.
The restrictions above apply to Deixis itself and not to any third-party component distributed with it. Each such component is governed solely by its own licence, which prevails over these terms to the extent of any conflict.
In particular, this software distributes unmodified binaries from the FFmpeg project (in the "ffmpeg" folder of the installation directory) under the GNU Lesser General Public License version 3. You may modify, replace, and reverse engineer those components as that licence permits, and nothing above restricts you from doing so. The licence text, the attribution notice, and the exact upstream build they were taken from are in FFMPEG-LICENSE.txt, FFMPEG-NOTICE.md and PROVENANCE.txt beside them; the corresponding source is published alongside each release.
